Have you heard of Banksy, VHILS, or Blek Le Rat?
These are famous graffiti artists that have influenced the art scene. They come from the humble beginnings of spray paint and tags, but have perfected graffiti into an art form. Music is another powerful art form that can bring so many people together.
In this exercise, we are going to bring graffiti and music together. Choose one song from the list. Listen to the song as many times as you like. Think about how it makes you feel. What memories does it bring to mind? What kind of meaning does the song hold for you? Is there anything you would change, like the title, a lyric, or a musical note?
Let the music inspire you to create your own graffiti art about the song you chose. You may choose to include dialogue or use only pictures, graphics, or shapes to tell your story about the song.
STEPS:
1. Choose a song: Select one song from the list (see below).
2. Research: Look up the lyrics to your song. Watch the video and get inspiration.
3. Listen: Listen to the song several times. What does the song mean to you? Do you have a special memory that pops in your mind? How does the song make you feel? Are there things you dislike about the song? If so, how would you change the song?
4. Create: Ready…set…go! Now it’s time for you to create music graffiti. Use shapes, words, pictures, graphics, and colors to bring the song to life. Include feelings, memories, lyrics, people, or whatever represents the song to you.
