Has there ever been a time you felt powerless?
We all have stories from our real lives where we felt weak or without power. Reflect upon one of these times and write a letter describing what happened and how you felt. The letter can be to a specific person or to several people, but keep it anonymous! Therefore, address the letter to: Dear No One.
Now, what would you change?
Make a skit so you have the opportunity to relive the scene, transform the scene, and provide an alternative solution. What would you do differently? What would you say if you had the chance? How can the protagonist (you) experience victory? The goal is not to reenact the scene as it happened, but as it could have happened or could happen in the future.
3, 2, 1, Action!
Once you finish your letter and skit, you will rehearse it several times before you’re ready to hit the big screen. Then when you’re ready, have someone record you performing!
STEPS
1. Topic. Reflect upon a time where you felt powerless.
2. Compose. Write an original letter based on a time you felt powerless. What happened? How did you feel? Address the letter to: Dear No One.
3. Improvisation. Make a skit so you have the opportunity to relive the scene, transform the scene, and provide an alternative solution. (Actor Tip: Ask a friend to join your skit as a character, use props, or even consider playing both roles!)
4. Practice. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. Practice reading your letter and following it with your scene of transformation. (Actor Tip: ask to perform it in front of a friend or family member!)
5. Record. Film and publish!
TIPS & RESOURCES
Here is an example of a scene of oppression and possible scenes with solutions:
Here is a skit of oppression where a Taco Bell customer acts strongly against the employees:
Now, how could the youth reenact the scene to reach a solution? How might the customer change how she behaved? How might the cashier react differently?
