Short Story Activity Creating a Character (Part 1 of 2) Have you ever wanted to create a character, but didn’t know where to start, or how to keep your character’s personality and actions consistent throughout your story? This activity will help you create the best character for your story! Supplies: - Two blank sheets of paper (preferably without lines) - A few different colored pencils, pens, or markers (make sure you will be to read the color later) - A couple different magazines, a printer, or drawing utensils. - You and your creative mind! Steps:
1. On the blank sheet of paper, write the name of your character. This includes first, middle (if they have one), and their last name. If you can’t decide on a name right now, that’s okay!
Try completing this activity first, and then naming your character after.
2. Choose a different colored pen, pencil, or marker and choose multiple characteristics and traits for your character. Try to use a different color for every other trait or characteristic, but it’s okay if you have to use the same color more than one.
Here are some traits and characteristics to consider:
- Is your character a human? Are they an animal or a flower? (Think outside the box!)
- If your character is not human, who or what are they?
- Where does your character live?
- What does your character look like?
- What is your character’s favorite color?
- What pronouns does your character use?
- When is their birthday?
- What is your character’s favorite food?
- Who is your character’s best friend?
- What upsets your character?
- What makes your character happy?
- Who does your character live with?
- Where does your character like to go to have fun?
- Does your character go to school?
- Does your character have a job?
- What is your character’s favorite hobby?
- What is your character good at?
- What is your character bad at?
- What does your character want to learn?
3. Once you have a character for your story, use the second sheet of paper to create a personality board for your character. You can either draw your character or doodle their favorite things on this blank page. You can also find different images on the internet or from magazines to create the personality board of your character. You can add your own drawings or doodles to this, too!
4. This activity will help you build a good foundation for your story, which leads us to Part 2: Placing Your Character in a Scene.
